COVID-19: Nasarawa Health Workers Begin Strike Over Lack Of Hazard Allowance

Health workers unions in Nasarawa have embarked on a one week warning strike over non implementation of Coronavirus (COVID – 19) hazard allowance by the state government.

Addressing newsmen at the end of an emergency joint meeting in Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital, (DASH) in Lafia, spokespersons for the six unions in the hospital, Mr Alidzi Maga and Dr. Peter Idoko said the warning strike followed the expiration of a seven day ultimatum issued to the state government to meet their demands.

Chairman Association of Resident Doctors Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital Lafia Branch, Dr. Peter Idoko said, “Due to inadequate Personal Protective Equipment, (PPE), twenty one health workers including six medical doctors have tested positive for COVID-19″

At the time of filing this report, the health workers union officials were seen going round all the departments at the hospital to drive away their members to ensure full compliance with the strike.

Similarly, the state Commissioner for Health, Pharmacist Ahmed Yahaya said the state government has offered to implement 40 percent of the Covid-19 hazard allowance and appealed to them to return to work for the interest of humanity.

Recalled that health workers in Doma and Karu local government areas recently staged a protest while demanding for improved working condition.
